As the number of Tesla vehicles on the roads grows, so does the chance that a first responder will need to interact with a Tesla in some capacity. Recognizing the need for first responders to safely operate and handle Tesla vehicles in emergency situations, DVTOC created "Tesla Crash Course" to provide first responders (police, fire, EMT, dispatchers) with first hand exposure toTesla vehicles. Read the story of how Crash Course started here, the unique story of how Verona NJ Crash Course was sponsored by a therapy dog, and the time when two Danish Tesla fans joined Crash Crew.

Service to our community is an important part of DVTOC's mission. That is why we are inviting our members to join the Crash Crew, the group of volunteers that comes to our workshop and allows first responders to check out their Tesla and answer questions, including sometimes about ownership. If it's your first time participating, you might learn some useful information that could come in handy in an emergency situation. If you've done this before, thank you, we couldn't run this program without you. Check out the pictures from one of our recent workshops.

The first part of the workshop is a presentation with Q&A followed by hands-on interaction and demos with the Tesla models. This part is where the owner participation is critical. The first responders get to see how the door handles work in all models, where high voltage cables and cut loop are located, and much more.

FAQ

What are the benefits of joining Crash Crew?

  • All Crash Crew members will receive TWO free months of DVTOC club membership at their existing membership level for each Crash Course they participate in. Free tier members will get two months of Standard membership. You must pre-register and attend the workshop in order to receive this benefit.
  • New participants will receive an 11x17 laminated emergency response guide for their model to keep for future workshops.
  • Breakfast and/or Lunch will be provided during the workshop depending on the schedule.
  • Gain useful knowledge about handling a Tesla in emergency situations.

What does participation entail?

  • Register with the model you will bring. Most importantly, if you register, please attend. If anything comes up, that would prevent you from attending, please let us know as soon as possible so we can find a replacement for your model.

  • If all slots are full for your model, register for the waiting list. If someone cancels, we will contact you -- check your email.
  • Registrants will be provided instructions in advance.
  • Your primary role will be to participate in the hands-on demo with your Tesla vehicle -- basically like a show and tell -- and interact with the first responders.
  • For locations where the hands-on demo is indoors (cold or rainy weather), not all vehicles that register may fit inside the fire station. In this case, we will try to have at least one of each model indoors and we may need to ask you to participate without showing your vehicle.
Do I need to have any specialized knowledge or experience?
  • Participants should be comfortable with the operation and features of their vehicle and willing to review the relevant first responder guide.
  • During the hands-on demo you will point out things like how to open doors, operate the vehicle, use the key card, etc. Remember, they may need to move an operational vehicle off the road.
  • Some owners like to offer test rides in their cars; but that is optional, not an official part of the workshop.

What time should I arrive and how long will it last?

  • Instructions are provided in the registration and reminder emails.
  • If it is your first time, you should try to attend the presentation to learn the material we cover.
  • If you have attended prior workshops, you can arrive up to about 1.5 hours after the designated start of the workshop to attend just the hands on portion with your vehicle.
  • If you arrive late that is fine, park near the other Teslas and join us inside for the classroom part or for the hands-on portion of the workshop.
  • The full workshop is expected to last about about 3-4 hours depending on how many attendees there are and how much interest there is in the vehicles. About 2 hours of it is in the classroom with a break in the middle.

What should I wear?

  • DVTO Club T-shirt, official Tesla T-shirt, or first responder shirt
  • The hands-on portion may be outdoors, wear weather appropriate clothing or layers.

What is the plan in case of rain?

  • The event is rain or shine. On the day of the event we will communicate changes in parking location, if relevant, by email and on the #First-Responder-Classes channel on Discord.
